Byron E. Gipson, Shareholder
Byron graduated from Dreher High School in 1989. He later attended the College of Charleston, where he received Bachelor of Arts degrees in both English and Political Science. Upon graduation, Byron immediately entered the University of South Carolina School of Law. While at the law school, Byron served as president of the local chapter of the Black Law Students Association and was later chosen to serve as the organization’s Executive Director on the national level. During his second and third years of law school, he worked as a law clerk for Johnson, Toal & Battiste, P.A., where he gained valuable experience doing research and legal writing. He also played an integral role in the preparation and trial of several major criminal and civil cases.
After graduation from law school, Byron became the law clerk to the Honorable L. Casey Manning, Chief Administrative Judge for the Fifth Judicial Circuit. Byron joined the firm in August of 1997. He currently practices primarily in the firm’s Orangeburg, South Carolina office where he has developed a general practice which includes Criminal Defense and Personal Injury. Byron has successfully defended several major criminal cases throughout the State. He has developed a reputation for being a tenacious trial lawyer.
In February 2000, Byron was appointed to the South Carolina Humanities Council, Board of Directors, by Governor Jim Hodges. He was later elected as the Chairman of the Humanities Council in September 2004. In 2009, Byron was appointed to the Committee on Character and Fitness, by the Supreme Court of South Carolina. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the South Carolina Bar Foundation and the Brookland Federal Credit Union. He is currently a member of the American, South Carolina, Richland County and National Bar Associations. Byron is also a member of the Columbia Lawyers Association, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and the 100 Black Men of Columbia.
Byron is married to Denise Roher-Gipson. They have two children, Caleb and Kendall.
