Johnson, Toal & Battiste, P.A. was chartered as a professional association in 1975 by a formidable trio of lawyers—I.S. Leevy Johnson, William T. Toal and Luther J. Battiste, III—as an outgrowth of the sole proprietorship founded in 1968 by I.S. Leevy Johnson.  Originally, the firm limited its practice to accident cases, criminal defense and domestic disputes.  The practice now has expanded to become a full-service law firm with individual lawyers concentrating in specialized areas, representing businesses and individuals.

The firm maintains offices in two locations—Columbia, South Carolina and Orangeburg, South Carolina.  It has grown throughout its existence to a current size of seven (7) attorneys, two (2) office managers, and a support staff of twenty (20), which includes paralegals, legal assistants, bookkeepers and law clerks.

Johnson, Toal & Battiste, P.A. has the distinction of being the first law firm in the state of South Carolina to be integrated at the partner level.  The firm has also been selected to participate in the American Bar Association’s Minority Demonstration Program.  As a member of this select group, the firm has been retained to represent some of the largest corporations in the United States.  Johnson, Toal & Battiste, P.A. was the first minority firm in South Carolina to earn membership in this program.

Today, Johnson, Toal & Battiste, P. A. is regarded as one of the premier law firms in the state and in the nation.  The firm has received the highest rating for ability and ethics by Martindale-Hubbell legal rating service.  Its lawyers have received some of the most coveted legal awards in South Carolina.   Members of the firm have held the position of president of the major state and local law organizations.  Founding partners, I.S.
